Smart Mine Lights Enhance Safety in Shanxi Coal Mine

A batch of newly upgraded intelligent LED cap lamps is improving safety and efficiency for miners at the Tongmei Group coal mine in northern China’s Shanxi Province.

Unlike traditional heavy, lead-acid battery lamps, these new units feature lightweight lithium-ion batteries and high-intensity LEDs. Each lamp is equipped with a positioning chip and an SOS alert function, allowing supervisors on the surface to track miners’ locations in real time and respond quickly to emergencies.

“These lights are much brighter and last longer—over 15 hours on a single charge,” said Li Wei, a veteran miner. “They’re also much lighter on our helmets.”

Mine safety officials say the smart lighting system has already helped reduce response times during recent safety drills. The mine plans to fully replace its older equipment by the end of the year as part of its ongoing digital transformation efforts.
